Two hours west of Chongqing, carved into the cliffs of Dazu, are over 100,000 stone sculptures that have survived more than a thousand years. Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian figures ā some towering, some intricate enough to fit in your palm ā tell stories of devotion, morality, and the afterlife in a language that needs no translation.

2:00 PM ā Baoding Mountain Rock Carvings (å®é”¶å±±ē³å»)
The Baoding Mountain Rock Carvings are the crown jewel of Dazu ā a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring over 10,000 statues carved into the cliffs by the monk Zhao Zhifeng in the 12th century. The site blends Buddhist teachings with the rhythms of daily life, depicting scenes of compassion, morality, and karma in stunning, narrative detail. It's a sacred place where art, faith, and history come together in a way that's unlike anything else in China.
3:30 PM ā North Mountain Rock Carvings (åå±±ē³å»)
The North Mountain (Beishan) Rock Carvings date back to the 9th century and showcase over 290 grottoes filled with vivid Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian figures. Unlike crowded tourist spots, this site offers an intimate, unhurried encounter with ancient stone art ā intricate bodhisattvas, guardian deities, and narrative reliefs carved directly into the hillside. Notable highlights include the optional Duobao Pagoda and the striking Twin Buddha Statues, two of the finest examples of Tang and Song dynasty stone carving in all of China.
